Who we are
EFORT is the umbrella organisation linking Europe's national orthopaedic associations. Its aims reflect the will of
all participating associations to promote the exchange of scientific knowledge and experience in the field of
prevention, and both the conservative and surgical treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculo-skeletal system.
To this end, particular emphasis is placed on measures and projects focusing on education and research.
In pursuit of its aims, EFORT organises European conferences and instructional courses, in conjunction, of course, with
universities and other accredited institutions. It also initiates and supports basic and clinical research.
EFORT was established by the national associations for orthopaedics and traumatology from twenty European countries, and
is regarded as a shining example of a sensible approach to scientific globalisation in the public interest.
The Federation was founded in Marentino, Italy, in 1991 and now has 33 members and three associate scientific members. With regard to its
legal structure, EFORT was established as an association pursuant to Article 60 ff of the Swiss Civil Code. As a non-profit
organisation, all funds are used exclusively in the pursuit of the Federation's aims.
What we want
EFORT has established itself as a think-tank in the field of orthopaedics in Europe and has already made important
progress with regard to the implementation of uniform European examination standards. Work on a common implant register
is also at an advanced stage.
One of the aspects we plan to focus on is the development of new guidelines and standards for the various areas of
activity pursued by our members. Thrombo-Prophylaxis was the first topic to be dealt with at the EFORT Forum staged
at various national congresses. The "EFORT on Tour" project is aimed at putting together a group of first-rate orthopaedic
instructors to stage demo operations, presentations and case discussions at locations across Europe.
How we work
EFORT's legislative body is the General Assembly, which is comprised of the delegates from the national associations.
The General Assembly defines the Federation's policy, issues guidelines and sets objectives. As the Federation's highest
body, the General Assembly elects the members of the Executive Board for a period of two years. This period of office
may be renewed.
The Executive Board is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Federation and comprises eight delegates from different
European countries. The specialist committees listed below are structured to provide a democratic platform for discerning
common interests from among the specific needs of the individual national associations.
Particular care and attention is paid to financial management. This is the responsibility of the Treasurer, who is also
represented on the Executive Board. The Treasurer ensures that all investments made are in accordance with the purpose
and objectives of EFORT. The Executive Board is actively supported by a business advisor, which allows EFORT to benefit
from an in-depth knowledge of the markets and many years' experience in international business management.
