SOCIETY OF THE MONTH - February 2007
Société Francaise de Chirurgie Orthopédique et Traumatologique (S.O.F.C.O.T)
 Introduction
by Prof. Thierry Bégué General Secretary
The French Society of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatologique (SO.F.C.O.T.) was founded in 1918 for the promotion and the development of knowledge in its field. The purpose of this surgical speciality is to relieve and improve the functional state of the patients following a traumatism or an affection of the musculo-skeletal system at all the ages of their life. The SO.F.C.O.T gathers more than 3000 specialized surgeons and its strong representativeness makes a privileged interlocutor of the profession.
S.O.F.C.O.T. has started publishing a few years later its own Scientific Journal, the French Journal of Orthopaedics – Revue de Chirurgie Orthopedique et Traumatoloque de l´aparelhe motour.
The executive board of SOFCOT is now constituted by the President, two Vice Presidents, the General Secretary, Treasure, Past President and 8 members at large, representing as much as possible the distinct contexts in which orthopaedic medical acts are practiced in France, such as university hospitals, general hospitals, none profit Hospitals or clinical and private medical organizations.
The President is elected for one year mandate. The General Secretary and Treasure are elected each three years. The General Assembly of SOFCOT is elected annually during the national meeting in November.
On a yearly basis S.O.F.C.O.T. national congress welcomes around 2800 orthopaedic surgeons including 600 physicians coming overseas, mainly from the French speaking world in Europe, Africa and South America.
S.O.F.C.O.T. is responsible for the education and training of orthopaedics and trauma physicians, managed and delivered by the French College of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery, one of S.O.F.C.O.T. full members. The actual curriculum comprises one year resident programme on general surgery, followed by 4 years on orthopaedics and trauma surgery.
Formal admission as orthopaedic surgeon is granted upon one year fellowship in a selective orthopaedic surgery department.
S.O.F.C.O.T. represents more than three thousand physicians regarding legal and national policy matters. The Syndicat Nacional des Chirurguiens Orthopédistes (S.N.C.O.), one of S.O.F.C.O.T. full members, is the competent body, while acting as a union.
S.O.F.C.O.T. has been invited by the French government to take part in round table discussions addressing the evolution of medical and surgeries problems concerning the conservative and surgical treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculo-skeletal system in France.
We look forward to welcoming you in one of our annual meetings to be held this year from 5th to 8th November 2007.
