Norwegian Arthroplasty Register

The Norwegian Arthroplasty Register was started in 1987 on an initiative from the Norwegian Orthopaedic Association.

At the beginning total hip arthroplasty was registered, since 1994 also knee, elbow, ankle, toe, finger, shoulder and wrist replacements have been included.
The register is located at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen.
Since 2004 an Anterior Crutiate Ligament Register and a Fracture Register was established.
70 Departments are reporting to the Norwegian Arthroplasty Register.

About 7.000 Hip Replacements, 2.500 total Knee Replacements, 500 unicondylar Knee Replacements, 200 Shoulder Replacements, 50 Elbow Replacements, 30 Ankle Replacements, 150 Finger Replacements, 70 Toe Joint-Replacements and a small number of wrist replacements are registered by year.

The Norwegian Ministry of Health approved the Norwegian Register as a centre of Excellence in Arthroplasty.

The expertise in statistics and epidemiology of this groups is one of the most excellent worldwide.
EAR and the International Register Cooperation asked the statistical board of the Norwegian Register to take a leading role in the definition of worldwide guidelines for register evaluations.

Annual Reports, articles in peer reviewed journals and oral presentations at scientific congresses have a well respected contribution to assessment of implants and bone cement in arthroplasty.
