The Australian Orthopaedic Association has founded the AOA National Joint Replacement Register in June 1998 supported by the Commonwealth Government.
The individual states and territories joined the register step by step.
Since 2002 all 296 public and private hospitals performing joint replacement surgery in Australia participate in the register.
The data management and evaluation of the register is done at the University of Adelaide. Professor Stephen Graves from Royal Melbourne Hospital is the director of this register and responsible for the administration.
The register collects data about hip and knee replacements, including partial and unicondylar implants.
Each year about 26.000 hip replacements and more than 25.000 knee replacements are reported to the register.
Since partial and unicondylar replacement as well as resurfacing procedures of the hip are quite popular in Australia the international orthopaedic society might expect interesting results in this sector from the Australian Register.
