The Canadian Joint Replacement Register was started in May 2001 and is administrated by the Canadian Institute for Health Information.
All orthopaedic units from every province and territory in Canada submit data directly to the CJRR.
In Ontario orthopaedic surgeons keep a separate, local joint replacement register which delivers data to the CJRR.
63% of surgeons performing arthroplasty signed up for participation, this figure is growing quickly.
In some regions the level of complete coverage could be reached already.
About 20000 hip and 25000 knee replacements are documented annually.
The CJRR databank is linked to other databases in CIHI and includes also data concerning waiting lists for surgery, access to the medical service, clinical outcome and untoward events after surgery.
The annual report of the CJRR provides accurate information about the methodology used, epidemiological data as well and interesting figures for public health issues.
