The Arthroplasty Register of Finland was started in 1980 by an initiative of the Finnish Orthopaedic Association.
Since 1994 the National Agency for Medicines is responsible for this project.
80 departments are reporting to the Register Centre, located in Helsinki and leaded by Dr. Juha Nevelainen.
The Arthroplasty Register is part of the Finnish National Implant Register which also collects information about dental implants.
About 6700 Hip, 5700 Knee, 100 elbow and 200 shoulder replacements are registered per year.
The Finnish Register reports focus especially on epidemiological data, public health aspects like the share of operations, implants and results in different regions and changes of indications as well as figures on the use on single implants on the long term.
