Ladies and Gentlemen, dear colleagues,
Florence is well prepared to welcome the European orthopaedic family. We all come to an outstanding place of culture of this world, we are coming to one of the most remarkable places in the evolution of orthopaedics worldwide and we are hosted by one of the most important orthopaedic scientific societies founded in 1891.
We come together to celebrate the Opening of the Congress in the Dome of Florence, one of the most important churches of this world. For education, training and scientific discussions an outstanding scientific programme is prepared, the free papers are selected out of more than 4.000 abstracts. As usual in EFORT Congresses in addition scientific symposia, cross fires, instructional course lectures and outstanding industry symposia are organised. The European orthopaedic family will have orthopaedists from all parts of the world with a special new accent concerning China, Brazil, Korea, Japan and Argentina, but of course as usual in our cooperation USA.
Not only cooperation to other orthopaedic societies are important, important are also involvements of patient organisations or others specialised societies like EULAR. We are happy that they participate actively in our EFORT Congress. Also highly specialised groups like International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) are with us in combined symposia.
A family congress in Florence would be incomplete and so not understandable without social events to bring us all together in typical Florentine locations, such as Il Duomo for the Opening Ceremony and Palazzo Corsini to meet for the Florence Night.
With kindest regards,
Prof. Wolfhart Puhl
President of EFORT

The Portuguese Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology was founded in 1947. Ever since its founding the Portuguese Society has undergone several changes. In 1983 specialty sections started to appear, the first of which was the Paediatrics Orthopaedics Section, and nowadays there are a total of 9 sections: shoulder and elbow; hand and wrist; spine; hip; knee; forefoot and foot; tumours and biomechanics. Almost all Portuguese Orthopaedic surgeons are members of SPOT.
