The death of the President-elect 2008/2009, Prof. Frantz Langlais, made it necessary to hold an extraordinary General Assembly in 2007. On the occasion of the German Congress of Orthopaedics, it took place in Berlin on 27 October 2007.

The first point of the agenda was the new elections to the EFORT Executive Committee and the elections of three new members of the EFORT Finance Committee.

The delegates of the General Assembly voted unanimously in successive order for the period 2008-2009:

• Prof. Dr. Karl-Göran Thorngren to be President
• Prof. Dr. Miklós Szendroi to be Vice-President
• Prof. Dr. Pierre Hoffmeyer to be Member at Large

According to those votes the EFORT Executive Committee for the year 2008 will consists of the following persons:

• President: Prof. Dr. Karl-Göran Thorngren, Sweden
• Vice-President: Prof. Dr. Miklós Szendroi, Hungary
• General Secretary: Dr. Manuel Cassiano Neves, Portugal
• Treasurer: Prof. Dr. Martti Hämäläinen, Finland
• Past President: Prof. Dr. Wolfhart Puhl, Germany
• Member at Large I: Prof. Dr. Stephen R. Cannon, UK
• Member at Large II: Prof. Dr. Pierre Hoffmeyer, Switzerland
• Member at Large III: Prof. Dr. Maurilio Marcacci, Italy

The following were voted as new members of the EFORT Finance Committee:

• Prof. Dr. A. Mazhar Tokgozoglu from Turkey

From 15 to 18 November 2007 the EFORT Executive Committee met in the snowy Allgäu, Germany, Hotel “Sonnenalp” to have its Strategy Meeting and last ExCom Meeting of the year 2007 and within the presidency of Prof. Dr. Wolfhart Puhl. As Allgäu is the home of Prof. Puhl, the ExCom has chosen this location. To guarantee a better outcome of the meeting EFORT decided to have – attached to the Executive Meeting – a one day Strategy Meeting as a moderated session with an independent moderator. The main topic was to discuss the identity of EFORT.

Following a classic approach to strategic planning, the Executive Board identified the organisation’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats, and then defined its new identity including its top five strategic priorities for the next three years.

As a result of the strategic dialogue and the analysis of the discussions about EFORT’s strengths and opportunities the Executive Board redefined the organisation’s identity to be:

“Working on behalf of the European Orthopaedic & Traumatology community, EFORT aims to secure mobility, musculoskeletal health and quality of life.”

EFORT and EULAR have recently initiated a dialogue to strengthen the collaboration between the organisations, realizing that both are representing physicians who are managing overlapping groups of patients. As the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, EFORT has established as one of its goals the development of orthopaedic care by improving the level of education and making it more uniform around Europe.
