Presidential Message

Prof. Wolfhart Puhl Dear Participants of the 8th EFORT Congress,

In the name of EFORT and personally I heartily welcome you in the culture city of Florence. A huge congress is prepared and will take place in historical surroundings.

The Opening of this orthopaedic congress will take place in the huge building of the Dome of Florence. We all are there at 6:30 pm, will feel the spirit of such a prestigious building, will listen to messages, which we all later are able to discuss, and we will listen to wonderful Italian music given by a famous choir and orchestra.

All activities of the scientific congress will take part in the Fortezza da Basso an old Medici fore.

Free papers, posters, ePosters, symposia, instructional course lectures, cross fire sessions and excellent industry symposia will bring the scientific orthopaedic community together.

A special attention should be given to the EULAR/EFORT Symposium, the symposium of the Patient Organisation and the symposium together with IOF and BJD, all a start for new cooperation and necessary to widen the training possibilities and discussions inside EFORT.

Heartily welcome to EFORT Congress in Florence.

Prof. Dr. Wolfhart Puhl
EFORT President

Message from the LOC Chairman

After three year of preparation, the crucial moment for the 8th Congress of EFORT has almost arrived. The moment is 13.00 o'clock of 11 May, when the scientific works will begin at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence. This is the biggest orthopaedic Congress ever held not only in Italy, but also in Europe. So far, in fact, no Congress has gathered more than 8000 thousands orthopaedic surgeons coming from all western and eastern European countries. The most crucial moment, however, will be the Opening Ceremony, which will be held, on the same day, in one of the most wonderful churches in the world, the famous Santa Maria delle Grazie, the Dome of Florence.

The scientific programme of this Congress is absolutely outstanding, with a number of Symposia, Cross Fires and Instructional Course Lectures which overcomes all previous EFORT Congresses, as well as any orthopaedic Congress ever organized in Europe. This body of scientific content is augmented by 1500 Free Papers and a similar number of Posters.

The social programme has its topic moment on 13 May with the Florence Night in Palazzo Corsini, one of the most beautiful and ancient buildings in Florence, facing the Arno and Ponte Vecchio.

I'm certain that all those who will attend this Congress will live a unique experience to be remembered for the rest of their life.

Prof. Franco Postacchini

THE EUROPEAN PAEDIATRIC ORTHOPAEDIC SOCIETY

EPOS was founded on January 31, 1981 in Paris by Henri Bensahel, John Sharrard, Jürg Baumann, José de Mesquita Montes, and Deitrich Tönnis, and the first scientific meeting was held one year later. From the very beginning, EPOS was a dynamic force in stimulating multicenter clinical and basic research related to the growing skeleton. Since then, new knowledge from different fields provided better understanding of musculoskeletal disorders in terms of genetic background, embryonic development as well as modern imaging techniques. Recent advances and newly developed devices used for deformity correction, limb lengthening and pediatric and adolescent fracture treatment have provided more therapeutic options than ever before. EPOS became a well recognized and prestigious organization that established a network of open dialogue between pediatric orthopaedic surgeons around the world, transcending geographical distances and linguistic barriers.

Society of the month

SPOT Italian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology

The Italian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology was founded in Rome in 1892.

In the history of the Italian Orthopaedics first of all, we must remember Putti and Delitala, known all over the world and who first introduced modern Orthopaedics, but also many other surgeons have contributed to the development of the Orthopaedic domain, among them have to specially remembered: Riccardo Galeazzi for the treatment of scoliosis; Oscar Scaglietti, for the surgery of the disk hernations; Giorgio Monticelli, for limb and hip deformities, expert on hip pathology on both children and adults; Mario Campanacci, for the musculoskeletal tumors; Giovanni De Bastiani, for the external fixator and Renato Bombelli, for biomechanics in hip surgery.
