Presidential Message

Ladies and Gentlemen, dear colleagues,

The 8th EFORT Congress, 11th to 15th of May 2007, held in Florence, Italy, was a success and so again it was a step forward for EFORT and the European Orthopaedic Family.

The excellent scientific programme was based in the free papers on more than 4.300 reviewed abstracts. Pre-discussed symposia and instructional courses as well as excellent industry symposia were of interest and of benefit to the audience. The congress showed, that there are special topics, which are of highest interest for orthopaedics and traumatology, but not intensively discussed till now.

So, it was of interest to speak about osteoporosis and fragility fractures, to speak about pain management in musculosceletal disorders and non-surgical treatment of osteoarthritis. In general obviously it is more and more of value to discuss not only small sophisticated aspects of a disease but more the whole management of a problem. This for example was the case when the management of infection in endoprothesis was discussed. Increasingly economical aspects of our daily work have to be discussed. In this sense continuous passive motion became a topic of increasing interest to be included in different surgical treatments of joint diseases and also the late rehabilitation.
