EFORT: Advocating for Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the EU Level

EFORT actively collaborates with EU policymakers directly or through the Biomedical Alliance, to ensure the orthopaedic and trauma community's voice is heard in shaping healthcare and research policies. Through evidence-based proposals, partnerships, and involvement in EU-funded projects and expert committees, EFORT contributes to key initiatives like the Medical Device Regulation and Continuing Medical Education.

The EFORT Committee on European Affairs plays a vital role in monitoring EU developments, fostering collaboration, and positioning our organisation as a key partner in addressing Europe’s health and Research challenges. It conveys concerns and expectations of national associations to European decision-makers.

BIOMEDICAL ALLIANCE IN EUROPE

Biomedical Alliance Spring Meeting

Within the Biomedical Alliance, Scientific Societies join together to advocate for Science, Education and Research. At its Spring Meeting (Brussels, Belgium, 5-6 June), the Biomedical Alliance covered many topics that are currently being discussed at the European Union level in  Brussels.

Focusing on the future of European Health Union and Clinical Trials, the Biomedical Alliance’s meeting attracted representatives from scientific societies but also from the European Commission or the EMA. This spring meeting also enabled discussion with the UEMS on new accreditation standards and processes.

The upcoming multiannual financial framework as from 2028 is currently being discussed and funding in health are seriously undermined by changing priorities. Medical Societies signed a letter to advocate for the maintaining of high level of EU funding in Health as key instrument to improve citizen’s well-being.

IMPACT OF MDR IN ORTHOPAEDICS

EFORT Survey: Assessing the Impact of MDR on Orthopaedic Implants

Since the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR) came into effect in May 2021, its objective has been to enhance patient safety through stronger clinical evidence.

However, its implementation may have also led to the withdrawal of certain Class III orthopaedic implants from the market.

As the European umbrella organization for Orthopaedics and Traumatology, EFORT holds key positions within EU regulatory bodies, including the Medical Device Coordination Group (MDCG) at DG SANTE and the Expert Panels at EMA.

To ensure that the voice of the orthopaedic community is heard in these discussions, we are again conducting an MDR-related survey to assess the real-world impact of MDR on implant availability.

We invite you to participate in this important survey, which will take no more than 15 minutes to complete. Your insights will help us advocate for solutions that support both innovation and patient care.
