Participants can look forward to a comprehensive scientific programme featuring keynote lectures, instructional courses, symposia, and interactive sessions designed to support professional growth and the pursuit of excellence in patient care. Beyond the academic exchange, the Congress also offers a unique environment to strengthen professional networks and build new collaborations.

Online registration is now open! We encourage all participants to log in or create an account through the official registration platform and to secure their attendance early in order to benefit from preferential rates.

Málaga, the stunning host city of EFORT 2026, is also one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations, renowned for its Mediterranean charm and vibrant coastline. In addition to welcoming the EFORT Congress attendees, the city will also be hosting its usual influx of holidaymakers. This dual demand is expected to place significant pressure on the local hotel market, with accommodation likely to fill up quickly. To ensure a smooth and comfortable stay, we strongly recommend that all delegates secure their bookings as early as possible, as availability will be limited.

Join us in Málaga in May 2026 and take part in shaping the future of orthopaedics through innovation and transdisciplinary exchange.

EFORT WEBINAR | MONDAY 24 NOVEMBER 2025 | 19:00 CET

CELL-FREE PRODUCTS IN OA: SECRETOM, EVS AND EXOSOMES

The Webinar will be chaired by Laura DE GIROLAMO, PhD Brix | Director of REGAIN - REgenerative GAleazzi INstitute | Milan, Italy

This EFORT Educational Webinar will analyse the cutting-edge science and emerging clinical application of cell-free therapeutics for Osteoarthritis (OA)—the most promising area of musculoskeletal regeneration.

The learning objectives of this webinar are:

  • Understand Exosome Fundamentals and Mechanisms.
Explain the basic biology of exosomes ("Tiny vesicles, big effect"), including their origin, composition, and role as key mediators in cell-to-cell communication. Articulate the specific mechanisms by which exosomes exert their therapeutic effects (e.g., anti-inflammatory, regenerative) in the context of joint disease.
  • Analyse Production and Potency Factors.
Evaluate the significant impact of mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) cultivation methods on the quantity, quality, and resultant therapeutic efficacy of their derived Extracellular Vesicles (EVs).
Identify the critical production variables that researchers and developers must control to ensure consistent and potent cell-free OA biotherapeutics.
  • Assess Clinical and Safety Data.
Appraise the current scientific and clinical evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of exosome biotherapeutics specifically for the treatment of joint disease. Discuss the major challenges and considerations necessary for the clinical translation of exosome-based therapies, including regulatory pathways and safety monitoring in patients.

This Webinar is organised by EFORT independent of any commercial educational support.

EFORT WEBINAR REPLAY AVAILABLE!

This joint initiative from UEMS and EFORT in education result in a high-quality European Examination for Orthopaedics and Traumatology Surgeons in Europe and beyond.

The EBOT Exam consists in a two-part examination: a written exam held in the different examination centres in Europe and as proctored online exam and a presential oral exam.

As per 2025, EBOT proposes its oral examination in four different languages thanks to its close cooperation with the national orthopaedic societies.

EFORT has launched its part II oral exam series. The very first EBOT Turkish Oral Exam took place in Ankara, Türkiye from 24 to 25 October 2025.

Thanks to the strong collaboration with TOTBİD, this first EBOT-TK Oral session was a resounding success, attracting a wide range of dedicated candidates.

This landmark event was chaired by Prof. Merter Yalçınkaya, MD, FEBOT under the aegis of Prof. Enrique Gómez Barrena, Chair of EBOT Examination.

The examination was robustly managed by a dedicated team of 50 examiners, 2 supervisors (Prof. Mehmet Demirhan and Prof. Haluk Berk), and 5 examination secretaries.

Congratulations to all the successful candidates and a warm thank you to every examiner and volunteer involved! Hepinize tebrikler!

The last EBOT Oral exam of 2026, EBOT-ES in Spanish language, will take place in Madrid, Spain, from 22 to 23 November and will be organised by SECOT.

EFORT and UEMS wish all the best to candidates and continue to strive for the highest standard of education in Orthopaedics and Traumatology.

EFORT: Advocating for Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the EU Level

EFORT actively collaborates with EU policymakers directly or through the Biomedical Alliance, to ensure the orthopaedic and trauma community's voice is heard in shaping healthcare and research policies. Through evidence-based proposals, partnerships, and involvement in EU-funded projects and expert committees, EFORT contributes to key initiatives like the Medical Device Regulation and Continuing Medical Education.

The EFORT Committee on European Affairs plays a vital role in monitoring EU developments, fostering collaboration, and positioning our organisation as a key partner in addressing Europe’s health and Research challenges. It conveys concerns and expectations of national associations to European decision-makers.

BIOMEDICAL ALLIANCE IN EUROPE

BioMed Alliance Advocates for Smarter MDR and IVDR Implementation

In October 2025, the BioMed Alliance advanced its advocacy on the Medical Devices Regulation (MDR) and In Vitro Diagnostic Regulation (IVDR) through a response to the European Commission’s call for evidence and by facilitating a site visit for EU officials at UZ Leuven.

The Alliance emphasized that, while MDR and IVDR safeguard patient safety and foster innovation, implementation gaps risk access to safe and effective devices. Key recommendations include stronger EU-level coordination, improved transparency of clinical evidence, proportionate requirements, and support for emerging technologies.

The UZ Leuven visit gave officials a first-hand view of medical devices in practice, highlighting how current regulatory challenges affect innovation and patient care.

BIOMEDICAL ALLIANCE IN EUROPE

BioMed Alliance Calls for Simplified and Smarter Digital Health Rules

On 14 October 2025, the BioMed Alliance released recommendations from healthcare professionals and researchers on improving the digitalisation of healthcare and simplifying the related regulatory framework. Drawing on an internal survey, the document outlines key views on health data use, AI integration, and current legislative challenges.

The Alliance stresses the need for clearer, sector-specific guidance and stronger collaboration among policymakers, healthcare professionals, patients, and researchers. Simplification efforts—such as the Digital Omnibus, EHDS, and AI Act—should advance iinnovation while maintaining safety and supporting those delivering and developing care.

IMPACT OF MDR IN ORTHOPAEDICS

EFORT Survey: Assessing the Impact of MDR on Orthopaedic Implants

Since the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR) came into effect in May 2021, its objective has been to enhance patient safety through stronger clinical evidence.

However, its implementation may have also led to the withdrawal of certain Class III orthopaedic implants from the market.

As the European umbrella organization for Orthopaedics and Traumatology, EFORT holds key positions within EU regulatory bodies, including the Medical Device Coordination Group (MDCG) at DG SANTE and the Expert Panels at EMA.

To ensure that the voice of the orthopaedic community is heard in these discussions, we are again conducting an MDR-related survey to assess the real-world impact of MDR on implant availability.

We invite you to participate in this important survey, which will take no more than 15 minutes to complete. Your insights will help us advocate for solutions that support both innovation and patient care.
