EFORT POSITION PAPER

EFORT Position: Shaping the Future of EU Medical Device Regulation

EFORT has officially responded to the European Commission’s proposal 2025/0404 (COD) regarding the targeted revision of the MDR and IVDR

Representing over 60,000 surgeons, our position balances the need for innovation with the non-negotiable requirement for patient safety.

While EFORT welcomes measures to prevent device shortages and reduce administrative burdens for SMEs, we have raised critical concerns regarding:

  • The "Equivalence" Loophole: We strongly oppose allowing high-risk Class III devices to enter the market without dedicated clinical investigations.
  • Scientific Validity: We advocate for a science-based approach to certificate renewals, using high-completeness (95%+) national arthroplasty registries to monitor long-term outcomes beyond the 5-year mark.
  • Expert Clinical Oversight: EFORT calls for the mandatory involvement of Expert Panels to ensure "sufficient clinical evidence" is judged by specialists who understand the practical realities of the operating theatre.

As the "clinical voice" of European Orthopaedics, EFORT remains committed to a regulatory framework that is both proportionate for industry and protective for our patients.

BIOMEDICAL  ALLIANCE IN EUROPE

Is your clinical trial ready for the FAST-EU track?

The Heads of Medicines Agencies (HMA) has launched FAST-EU, a new pilot to radically accelerate approval timelines for multinational clinical trials.

The regulatory landscape is shifting. FAST-EU (Facilitating and Accelerating Strategic Clinical Trials in the EU) is now live, offering shorter evaluation timelines for strategic trials. While medical societies don't apply directly, your support in helping sponsors prepare their "Expression of Interest" is vital.

If your members or partners are planning a submission for April, the next window to join this high-speed pilot opens 23-24 March 2026. Don’t let slow regulatory hurdles delay patient access to innovation.
