Shape the Future of O&T Care: Call for Abstracts Open for EFORT 2027

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Abstract submissions are the scientific cornerstone of the EFORT Annual Congress, driving evidence-based practice and vetting the clinical standards of tomorrow.

As Europe’s largest platform for orthopaedic and trauma knowledge, our core educational programme relies on high-value empirical research, long-term outcome studies, and critical evaluations of emerging techniques to continuously elevate surgical precision across the discipline.

By submitting your abstract for the upcoming EFORT Annual Congress 2027 in Athens, you actively contribute to the international scientific narrative.

Presenting your work offers a unique opportunity to benchmark findings against global standards, gain peer validation, and directly influence clinical decision-making across the global surgical community.

We invite clinicians, researchers, and specialists to submit their original work and help shape the future of musculoskeletal care.

Best regards,

EFORT WEBINAR | MONDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 2026 | 19:00 CEST

3D Surgical Planning & Patient-Specific Techniques in Tibial Fractures

As surgical technology evolves, patient-specific virtual planning and 3D intraoperative guidance are becoming indispensable tools for addressing complex lower limb trauma. This EFORT Educational Webinar, organised by the Trauma Education Group (TEG) of the EFORT Education Committee, focuses on the practical application of 3D techniques in tibial fracture management—spanning from acute injuries to complex post-traumatic deformity corrections.

Through real-world clinical cases, expert faculty will demonstrate how 3D technology enhances diagnostic precision and surgical accurac<.

  • Acute Care: Understand the principles and indications for 3D surgical planning in acute tibial plateau fractures.
  • Deformity Correction: Recognise the role of 3D technology in treating post-traumatic malunions and non-unions of the proximal tibia.
  • Surgical Precision: Learn how virtual planning and patient-specific guides facilitate complex reconstructions and optimise outcomes.

This Webinar is organised by EFORT independent of any commercial educational support.

Robotic-arm-assisted versus conventional total knee replacement (RACER-Knee): a pragmatic, multicentre, participant-masked and assessor-masked, superiority, randomised controlled trial

Conclusion: RACER trial, a randomised trial comparing robotic TKR (168) with conventional TKR (171) for knee osteoarthritis. Outcome forgotten joint score (FJS) was similar between groups, as well as adverse events.

Critique point (Prof. Rob Nelissen | Netherlands), although subjective  patient reported outcomes are important, more interesting would have been to have also an objective end-point like implant migration using CT-RSA or conventional RSA.

THE EBOT EXAM CAMPAIGN 2026

This joint initiative from UEMS and EFORT in education result in a high-quality European Examination for Orthopaedics and Traumatology Surgeons in Europe and beyond.

The EBOT Exam consists in a two-part examination: a written exam held in the different examination centres in Europe and as proctored online exam and a presential oral exam.

EBOT Exam Part II - Oral Exams

The annual EBOT oral exam in English took place on the weekend of 19 to 20 September 2026 in Madrid, Spain.

The exam consisted of five interviews with two examiners each time, in which candidates respond to real-case scenarios of the sections proposed by EBOT: Spine, Upper Limb, Lower Limb, Basic Science and Paediatrics.

Successful candidates received a Fellow of the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology Certificate.

While candidates for the EBOT oral exam in English were in Madrid, Spain, others will now move on to take their oral exam in their native languages, directly with one of the National Societies that organise EBOT oral national exams, these are:

  • TOTBID (EBOT-TK in Turkish, 23-25 October 2026, Istanbul, Türkiye),
  • EEXOT (EBOT-GR in Greek, 07-08 November 2026, Athens, Greece), and
  • SECOT (EBOT-ES in Spanish, 21-22 November 2026, Madrid, Spain).

Get ready, stay focused, and happy studying!

Compliance Alert: EU AI Act Transparency Requirements Now Active

New transparency rules under the EU AI Act took effect on 01 August 2026, establishing strict requirements for identifying AI-generated content and notifying users when interacting with AI systems.

Given the rapid adoption of AI across healthcare delivery and medical research, these rules directly impact biomedical professionals and institutions.

The European Commission has released new guidelines to help healthcare providers and deployers ensure full compliance.

Policy Update: Understanding the EU Joint Clinical Assessment (JCA) Framework

The European Commission’s Joint Clinical Assessment (JCA) framework provides a harmonised, EU-level scientific analysis of clinical efficacy and safety for novel medicinal products and medical technologies.

Designed to support national HTA processes and reduce duplicate evaluations across EU member states, JCA reports deliver comparative clinical evidence while preserving individual national mandates for pricing and reimbursement.

Healthcare providers and technology developers can access implementation updates, guidance documents, and platform submission protocols through the European Commission portal.
