EFORT Málaga 2026: Where Innovation Meets the Next Generation

Dear colleagues,

In less than two weeks, from Monday 04 May to Wednesday 06 May, the European Orthopaedic and Traumatology community will gather in the vibrant city of Málaga, Spain, for the 27th EFORT Annual Congress

We are glad to announce that EFORT Congress 2026 has been accredited with up to 17 European CME credits (ECMEC®) by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME).

This landmark event has truly become a global crossroads for our specialty, attracting world-renowned experts and prestigious international partners, including SICOT, AAOS, APOA, and AOA.

This year, we are bridging the gap between experience and innovation by integrating young moderators into every session.

From Full-day tracks on Hip & Knee Arhtroplasty to deep dives into AI and Medical Device Regulation (MDR), our Scientific Programme is designed for active debate and clinical excellence.

Supported by O& T Industry Leaders like AOreckon, Becton & Dickinson, Stryker, Ad Vita, Enovis, Philips, and Implantcast, amongst others, this is where the future of O&T becomes reality!

Best regards,

Welcome Message from EFORT President 2025-2026:

EFORT WEBINAR | MONDAY 27 APRIL 2026 | 19:00 CEST

Complex Elbow Fractures Management

This EFORT Educational Webinar, chaired by Prof. Thierry BÉGUÉ | Service de Chirurgie Orthopédique, Traumatologique et Réparatrice | Hôpital Antoine Béclère | Université Paris-Saclay | Paris-Clamart, France, and with  lectures from Prof. P. BIBERTHALER (Germany), Prof. B. LEFEBVRE (Belgium) and Prof. A. MAZZOLA (Italy), is organised by the Trauma Education Group of the EFORT Education Committee, and will focus on the management of complex elbow fracture.

The elbow remains one of the most "unforgiving" joints in the human body, where the margin between functional recovery and permanent stiffness is razor-thin. This webinar provides a comprehensive deep dive into the management of high-complexity elbow trauma, ranging from acute injury patterns to the management of late complications.

The learning objectives of this webinar are:

  • Identify and Classify complex Monteggia variants in adults to ensure appropriate restoration of the proximal ulna and radiocapitellar joint.

  • Formulate a strategic pathway for the management of elbow fracture-dislocations, prioritizing the sequence of stabilization (bones vs. ligaments).

  • Evaluate techniques for malunion correction in the distal humerus, including the use of 3D planning and stable internal fixation.

  • Analyse clinical outcomes and common complications of elbow trauma to optimize post-operative rehabilitation and minimize joint contracture.

  • Critically assess alternative surgical approaches through the presentation of complex clinical cases and peer-to-peer discussion.

This Webinar is organised by EFORT independent of any commercial educational support.

BIOMEDICAL ALLIANCE IN EUROPE

MDR/IVDR Update: Balancing Innovation and Safety

Following the European Commission’s proposed revisions to the MDR and IVDR, the BioMed Alliance has released a position paper advocating for a "fit-for-purpose" regulatory environment. While proposed simplifications to IVDR Article 5.5 should reduce administrative burdens and improve access to personalised care, the Alliance warns against any reduction in safety standards or clinical evidence requirements.

To demonstrate these practical challenges, the Alliance recently hosted EU policymakers at UZ Leuven and co-organized a high-level session at the EU Conference on Medical Devices

These efforts emphasise that sustainable innovation must remain evidence-driven, transparent, and balanced with the rigorous safety standards essential to the orthopaedic community.

Digital Transformation: Strengthening Innovation and Privacy

As digital transformation reshapes research and clinical practice, the BioMed Alliance has released a position statement on the European Commission’s Digital Omnibus Proposals. Based on feedback from healthcare professionals, the statement calls for essential improvements to the GDPR and the AI Act to better support data-driven healthcare.

Key recommendations include clearer guidelines on pseudoanymisation and health data processing, alongside sector-specific GDPR guidance for research. To ensure patient safety, the Alliance advocates for robust safeguards for sensitive data, rigorous post-market monitoring of AI, and targeted measures to reduce algorithmic bias.

Ultimately, these updates aim to foster a regulatory environment that promotes AI literacy and sustainable innovation while maintaining the highest standards of privacy.
