23rd EFORT annual Congress

The 2022 Scientific Awards

Every year, EFORT awards the laureates of the Jacques Duparc and Free Paper Awards.

This year’s awards certainly have a special meaning after two years of “virtualising” around. A prize is considered to mark a career pinnacle of success, and EFORT wants to recognise this publicly.

Because, it is of the belief that the body of work that the winners represent does not only support the scientific accountability of an organisation but actually sustains medical progress, engagement in science innovation and reflects the societal changes in research and clinical practice.

Last but not least, awards create positive role models likely to inspire the younger generation to pursue a career in Orthopaedics and Traumatology, hence securing a strong pipeline of talents for a profession which faces many challenges & opportunities - “Modern Patient Needs, Challenges and Solutions in O&T”.

Please, join us in congratulating this year’s winners during the Opening Ceremony of the 23rd EFORT Annual Congress!

Challenges at different levels

To reflect the reality & instant in the orthopaedic and trauma profession is part of surgeon’s education. Two seemingly unrelated sessions showing on one hand, how impact of conflicts “enter” operating theatres of western European cities, and on the other how clinical debates move on for the safety of clinical practice. Tomorrow, on Friday 24 June 2022.

War Victims – Are We Prepared? (11:00-12:00)

This session will want to better understand the needs & challenges of the medical community in conflict areas and in particular the orthopaedic and traumatology surgeons. What does the medical care look like in hospitals & in the field to treat war injuries. But also, because of the impact of population movement, how are the medical community & health systems in our regions challenged? It raises the question about planning and delays of elective surgeries when it comes to prioritising patients. War injuries are specific and new patterns develop in both, the type of lesions but also the treatment and medication. Experts from the EFORT Trauma Group will address this preparedness in the treatment of war victims.

VTE Prophylaxis Under Debate: Consensus And Evidence (11:00-12:00)

Also within orthopaedics, patients unfortunately develop the complication of Venous thromboembolism (VTE) and sometimes it can be fatal. Despite a full array of medication the incidence of VTE has unfortunately always remained stable, and the risk and benefits of each strategy are still under debate. Oral prophylaxis, including new formulations but also aspirin, are gaining protagonist in many countries and hospitals, but comparative evidence is limited. Comparing and discussing the current alternatives and guidelines may help to make a decision about VTE prophylaxis for your patients.

Don’t forget to collect your European CME credits

We are pleased to announce you that the 23rd EFORT Congress 2022 in Lisbon, Portugal, has been granted a maximum of 19 European CME credits (ECMEC) by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME).

Each medical specialist should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.

The EACCME® credit system is based as following:

  • Wednesday 22 June 2022 > Max. of 5 credits
  • Thursday 23 June 2022 > Max. of 8 credits
  • Friday 24 June 2022 > Max. of 6 credits

Regulations require scanning in and out of each session to collect the total amount of hours the medical specialist attended into the scientific programme as part of the educational activity of the congress.

Industry-Sponsored Symposia are not subject to CME accreditation and therefore do not count in the total of hours spent in the educational activity.

EFORT White Book Orthopaedics and Traumatology in Europe

The new landmark publication

This White Book is a comprehensive reference on current conditions and future needs, which can be used to facilitate decision making in our scientific societies as well as in European health politics.

This initiative is also intended to contribute to the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030).

Its overall aim is to provide information that will inform strategies to reduce the burden of musculoskeletal disorders and trauma on society.

This first edition launched during the EFORT Congress shall summarise the best available data to quantify the burden of musculoskeletal disorders, as well as the currently available infrastructure for its management.
