EFORT Recognition & Honorary Awards

EFORT recognises figures in the orthopaedic and trauma community

EFORT's Recognition Award is a rare distinction, but this year it honored Professor Jorge Mineiro, MD PhD, FRCSEd., acknowledging his remarkable contributions to the field of global orthopaedic and trauma surgery.

This prestigious award not only recognizes individuals who have advanced expertise and practice, but also those who have engaged in humanitarian work or elevated the reputation of the specialty.

Professor Mineiro is renowned for his role as the driving force behind the development of the EBOT Exam.

He explains, "Given the variations in training programs across European countries, we recognized the need for a standardised European Board Exam to ensure uniformity upon completion of training."

In addition, Prof. Li Felländer Tsai, Past President, and Prof. Søren Overgaard, Chair Science Commmittee, were honored with EFORT's Honorary Awards this year.

As EFORT President, Felländer-Tsai played a pivotal role in organising the first face-to-face congress post-pandemic, navigating the new challenges and approaches to education in this evolving era.

Over the course of three years, Søren Overgaard led the science committee, successfully transitioning from planning a scientific programme for an in-person event to creating a fully adapted virtual experience…and back.

EFORT expresses its deep gratitude to these exceptional individuals who have significantly contributed to raising the organisation's profile.

CORE-MD

Secure access to essential medical devices for children:

an open letter to Commissioner Stella Kyriakides

The paediatric and rare diseases community in the European Union currently faces the loss of essential medical devices that are indispensable for appropriate patient care.

For small patient groups like children or patients with rare diseases, the costs of (re)certification by Notified Bodies form a critical financial barrier for manufacturers to (re)introduce devices on the EU market.

The CORE-MD consortium as well as leading Scientific Societies and Medical Associations have issued a call for action to Commissionner Kyriakydes to ensure that children and patients with orphan diseases will have continued access to medical devices that are needed for ‘state of the art’ health care.

CORE-MD is a European Union Horizon 2020 project. It reviews methods for evaluating high-risk medical devices in order to translate expert evidence into advice for EU regulators and to recommend an appropriate balance between innovation, safety , and clinical effectiveness.
